This reality forms the basis of our curriculum which focuses on developing children’s skills to develop independence and tackle challenges with confidence. Our curriculum places:
In reality this means that our curriculum is based on helping children to develop the skills they need to thrive now and in the future. Learning is given a purpose by linking subjects through themes which last for varying lengths of time.
It is not possible to include every subject in every theme so some are taught discretely (such as maths, French and PSHE&C) and others will be taught later in the year as part of a different theme. Phonics and spelling are taught as discrete subjects on a daily basis using the DfE recommended schemes 'Letters and Sounds' and 'Support for Spellings' . The school follows the 2014 National Curriculum. We use the Rigby Star' reading scheme to support the teaching of reading.
Relevant, real life and exciting opportunities are planned as often as possible to enthuse children and give purpose to their learning. Opportunities include talking to professional actors to support our theme which culminates in a live performance in a professional theatre; a residential for our Year 4 children and visits to places such as Streetwise. We also give children the chance to contribute to the local community by organising fundraising opportunities and we welcome visitors to the school such as local paramedics and the Life Education Centre.

Because of our mixed age classes, it is not possible to rigidly adhere to a curriculum which is designed for single age classes, so we follow rolling programmes and adapt each theme to match what children need to learn within it.
The future is important…it’s where our children will spend the rest of their lives.
